Pittsburgh cyclists, take note! While our city boasts plenty of dedicated bike lanes, there are still times when riding on the sidewalk might be necessary. But when is it legal to do so?
General Rules:
The city’s ordinance regarding sidewalk riding is clear:
- On one-way roads, you must ride as near the left-hand curb or edge of the roadway as practicable in the direction of traffic.
- Riding on the freeway is prohibited.
- You may only ride on the sidewalk if:
- No bike lane is available.
- You are not in a business district.
Specific Situations:
- Children under 8 years old: The ordinance explicitly allows children under 8 to ride on the sidewalk.
- Medical conditions: If you have a medical condition that prevents you from riding safely in traffic, you can also ride on the sidewalk.
Things to Remember:
- While the ordinance allows sidewalk riding in certain situations, it’s always best to use a designated bike lane when available for safety and efficiency.
- When riding on the sidewalk, you are considered a pedestrian by other vehicles.
- Follow all traffic laws and yield to pedestrians and other vehicles.
